Butterfield 8

I formed Butterfield 8 to bring new perspectives to classic theatrical work. I also wanted to commission new work to examine controversial issues. My intention with the dual objectives of presenting classical work in new ways and addressing contemporary social issues with new artistic approaches was to re-engage audiences and trigger new thinking. Our first Butterfield 8 production was Medea, in which I combined movement and text to refresh the piece and awaken the audience to a new view.

“This is a list of the top 10 theaters you’ve never heard of that you really should. These are the hidden gems that don’t get all the ink. Of course, it’s impossible to include every company that deserves a spot, but here are 10 favorites — listed in alphabetical order — that should be on your radar.”

“This audacious little company tackles challenging fare with aplomb. Next up, the troupe is reviving Oscar Wilde’s infamous 1891 one-act Salome.”
